In the percutaneous technique the canals or the holes are opened by special sapphire blades with superfine needles instead of slits and the holes have a round shape instead of a lateral shape. This way each hole will have precisely the same size as the diameter of the hair follicles, which means each hole is very small, very tiny.
In the percutaneous technique, the extraction stage is Follicular Unit Extraction. Hair follicles are taken one by one from the donor area. The implantation stage is the same; the hair follicles are being placed into the round canals opened by sapphire blades with superfine needles.
Because the canals (the holes) in the recipient area have the same thickness as each hair follicles and with the right angels the percutaneous technique shows an extremely natural result.
In Percutaneous hair transplantation, the hair follicle is firmly anchored in the very small round holes. That is why hair follicles do not have the risk of moving.
Another advantage is the fast healing period. Just within 3-4 days there will no longer be crust at the transplanted area.
Disadvantages of the Percutaneous Technique
The procedure time in percutaneous technique is quite long. That is why the maximum amount of grafts in the percutaneous hair transplantation are limited to 1400 grafts per day. If more grafts would be needed the patient needs two consecutive days to complete the hair transplantation.
